American politician who became the first mayor of Omaha, Nebraska in 1857.

He served in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War.

He founded the Omaha Claim Club in 1954 and subsequently began developing the city.

He married Sophia Hoppin in 1856 and they had four children together.

He established the city of Omaha while James Buchanan was president of the United States.
