ABOUT JOANNE AKALAITIS
Theater director and winner of five Obie (Off-Broadway Theater) Awards for stage direction.
She studied at the Actor's Workshop in San Francisco and with the city's Mime Troupe after graduating from the University of Chicago in 1960.
She founded the Mabou Mines theatre company in New York in 1970.
She was married to composer Philip Glass , with whom she had two children.
She directed Harold Pinter 's The Birthday Party at the American Repertory Theater.
