He started his racing career with karting races in South Carolina.
He competed in his first NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the 2003 Rockingham 200.
His father Joe Lavender bought him his first race car.
He made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at the 2002 Virginia Is For Lovers 200, which was won by Tony Stewart .
