He kicked off his career as a trumpet and piano player for New York City dance bands.
He performed with Louis Armstrong , Benny Goodman , and Bud Freeman after returning from World War II.
His parents were Russian immigrants.
He was coaxed out of semi-retirement by Bing Crosby for the singer's final tour in 1976 and 1977.
