Baritone jazz and blues vocalist for over fifty years whose song "Everyday I Have the Blues" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
He traveled to the Vendome Theatre in Chicago to see Louis Armstrong play.
He first sang with clarinet and saxophone player Jimmie Noone.
He first married Lemma and, after their divorce in 1958, he remarried Jillean Hughes Dath.
He grew up listening to the works of Duke Ellington .
