Jazz artist whose musicality was admired by Thelonious Monk . Monk advised him to focus on writing new compositions.
He began his professional jazz career when he was 15. He created his first composition "Tiber Rag" for a 1962 high-school Latin project.
He composed the theme song for National Public Radio's long-running talk show "Fresh Air," hosted by Terry Gross .
He married dancer Mary Harrison in 1970, with whom he fathered a son, Max.
He provided the soundtrack for some of Andy Warhol 's earliest films.
