Johan de Witt
ABOUT JOHAN DE WITT
Politician known for being a major political figure in the Dutch Republic in the mid-17th century. He was in control of the Dutch political system from around 1650 until his murder in 1672.
He studied at the Leiden University and got a doctorate from the University of Angers.
In 1653, the States of Holland elected De Witt councilor pensionary.
He and his wife Wendela Bicker had four children. He was cannibalized by an angry pro monarch mob.
Both he and fellow political figure Maurice Bishop were born in the Netherlands.
