John Dowie

ABOUT JOHN DOWIE

Sculptor and painter known for his Three Rivers fountain in Victoria Square, Adelaide.

He studied architecture and painting at the University of Adelaide and worked during World War II as an assistant to Australian war sculptor Lyndon Dadswell and was one of the Rats of Tobruk.

He created over fifty public sculptures, including an Adelaide Airport memorial to Sir Ross Smith and busts of Mark Oliphant and Mellis Napier.

He died of a stroke while in a nursing home in Adelaide. His niece Penny Dowie became a painter.

He was born several years after the death of fellow sculptor Percival Ball , who also created art in Australia.
