Jazz artist who had a long association with Kenny Ball's Jazzmen beginning in 1969 and lasting until 1978.
He worked as a paperboy in order to afford records by pianists Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons .
He was the pianist on trumpeter Humphrey Lyttleton's hit record Bad Penny Blues from 1956.
His second wife, South African singer Peggy Phango, was first cousin to singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba .
His piano riff on Lyttleton's 1956 hit may have inspired Paul McCartney 's piano playing on Lady Madonna from 1968.
