ABOUT JOSé SERRA

Politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil from 2016 to 2017. He served as a Senator of São Paulo for 20 years, from 2003 until 2023. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2021.

He received his Masters and Ph.D. in economics from Cornell University. He was exiled from Brazil when he was 22 for serving as president of the National Student Union which opposed the existing conservative regime.

He has also served as a congressman, senator, Minister of Planning, Minister of Health,  Mayor of São Paulo, and Governor of São Paulo state.

His parents are Francesco Serra and Serafina Chirico. He married ballerina Mónica Allende in 1967. They have children Veronica and Luciano.

He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Michel Temer .
