International Boxing Hall of Fame light heavyweight who won silver in the 1956 Olympics and went on to become the WBA and WBC champion. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.
He joined the United States Army when he was 18 years old.
He was the New York State Athletic Commissioner from 1984 to 1988. He won 29 professional fights by knockout throughout his career.
His daughter Mariana Torres became an actress.
He was trained by Cus D'Amato, trainer and mentor to Mike Tyson .
