Republican politician who served as the 27th Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota and was in the U.S. Senate.
He graduated from the law school of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1927.
He served as a US.. Senator from South Dakota from 1962 to 1963 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Francis H. Case .
His nephew, Joseph "Jody" Bottum, is the former editor-in-chief of First Things, the religious conservative magazine.
He was succeeded in the Senate by George McGovern .
