Natural philosopher and chemist noted for the discovery of oxygen, isolating it in its gaseous state.
He founded the Theological Repository in 1768 to raise theological questions in an open forum.
He published The History and Present State of Electricity in 1767.
He married Mary Wilkinson on June 23, 1762. They had a daughter on April 17, 1763.
He often conversed with Thomas Jefferson .
