Award-winning actress who appeared in the stage production of Carousel and played roles in films such as Funny Girl .

She waited tables in nightclubs before she got her big break in Hollywood.

She won a Tony Award for her Broadway role as the mother of Fanny Brice on Funny Girl; she reprised that role in 1968, which won her an Academy Award.

She was born Margaret Kathleen O'Regan, in New York, the daughter of first-generation Irish immigrants.

Barbra Streisand played her daughter in Broadway and film productions of Funny Girl.
