He worked in the 1960s as an accompanist for singers in Detroit and California.

He toured with Dexter Gordon from 1979 until 1983.

His parents recognized his talents early on, and he began studying piano when he was five.

He collaborated with many popular artists of his time, including Yusef Lateef .
