ABOUT KIRO GLIGOROV
The first President of the Republic of Macedonia, an office he held from 1991 to 1999. He notably led his country to independence.
He was born in Bulgarian-controlled Serbia and studied law at the University of Belgrade.
He was injured in a 1999 assassination attempt in which a car-bomb exploded, killing his personal driver.
His son, Vladimir Gligorov, became a key figure in the Serbian Democratic Party.
He became the first President of the Republic of Macedonia in the same year that Ayaz Mutallibov briefly held the office of first President of Azerbaijan.
