He was a street-level drug dealer before rising to prominence as a crime boss.
He released a memoir entitled Mr. Untouchable in 2007, and was also featured in a 2008 documentary of the same name.
He and his wife Thelma Grant had a daughter together.
He did an interview with former enemy Frank Lucas for New York Magazine in 2007.
