ABOUT LIONEL GRIGSON

Jazz artist, composer, and teacher who also mastered the cornet and trumpet. He was known for his ardent support of young jazz musicians.

He was the co-leader of the Cambridge University Jazz Band during the early 1960s.

He was Professor of Harmony and Improvisation from 1983 until 1993 at Guildhall School of Music in London.

He was the son of critic and poet Geoffrey Grigson whose first wife was Margaret Busby, co-founder of publishing firm Allison & Busby.

He taught many future notables while at Guildhall, including saxophonist Courtney Pine .
