Jazz bassist and founder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. He was also involved in the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
He started playing double bass when he was fifteen years old and started playing professionally with greats like Dizzy Gillespie .
He was associated with free jazz, hard bop, and bebop genres.
He was born in Lexington, Mississippi. He passed away of pancreatic cancer.
He collaborated with Dewey Redman outside of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
