Portuguese Socialist Party politician. He began serving in the Parliament of Portugal in 1975.

In his youth, he was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party.

He ran for President of Portugal on two occasions: in 2006 and 2011.

He married twice and fathered three children.

He and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres were both Socialist Party politicians.
