ABOUT MANUEL LUJAN JR.
Former Republican politician who served New Mexico as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1969 to 1989. Under the administration of George H.W. Bush , he also served from 1989 to 1993 as the 46th United States Secretary of the Interior.
A decade after graduating from the College of Santa Fe, he lost a 1964 New Mexico State Senate race.
In 1978, he became the first Hispanic Republican to join the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
His father, Manuel A. Lujan, Sr., served as mayor of Santa Fe.
He was succeeded by Bruce Babbitt as U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
