ABOUT MARGARET ALVA

Between 2009 and 2014, Alva served as Governor of the Indian states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Goa, and Uttarakhand. Before turning her attention to gubernatorial politics, she served multiple terms in the Indian National Congress.

After completing her bachelor's degree at Bangalore's Mount Carmel College, she earned her J.D. from Government Law College and subsequently took office as President of the Young Women's Christian Association.

In late 2009, she became Uttarakhand's first female governor.

Her marriage to Niranjan Alva resulted in four children, including a son, Niret Alva, who had a high-profile career as a television producer.

In late 2008, she made controversial statements about congressional operations and subsequently met with Indian National Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi . The meeting brought about Alva's dismissal or resignation from several political party responsibilities.
