Considered one of the greatest liberal thinkers in Nicaraguan history who was a major proponent of Central American unity. He was an important politician, lawyer, and military leader.

He was named Minister of Foreign Relations in 1855.

He and Tomas Martinez co-founded a Junta government in which they both ran Nicaragua as presidents.

He was born in Leon.

Both he and Daniel Ortega have served as the president of Nicaragua.
