Diplomat, a suspended Catholic priest, and President of the United Nations General Assembly from 2008 to 2009.

He was a Roman Catholic priest with the Maryknoll congregation until he was denounced by Pope John Paul II for not resigning from office and being involved in the Sandinista revolution.

He was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2010 after serving as foreign minister of Nicaragua in Daniel Ortega's FSLN government from 1979 to 1990

He was born in Los Angeles to parents Miguel Escoto Muñoz and Margarita Brockmann Meléndez.

He was an outspoken critic of Ronald Reagan .
