Jazz artist who led The Fourth Way from 1968 until 1970, marking a period of heavy experimentation with fusion.
He performed with Yusef Lateef's band from 1963 until 1965.
He was awarded the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003 for his jazz contributions.
His family noticed his talent early on, and he started his piano studies at age 11.
He and saxophonist Dave Liebman collaborated on Duologue, a 2004 live recording.
