He spent 11 years with the NBC Symphony Orchestra as a guest artist under Toscanini's conducting and recorded several works with them.
He took over the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 1954 when it was little more than a small somewhat professional ensemble, helping to transform it into a renowned organization.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were of Austro-Hungarian and Russian descent.
He created a concert series presenting up and coming musicians and once featured the cellist Yo-Yo Ma .
