Director of the acclaimed film Chronicle of the Years of Fire and one of the most important directors of Arabic cinema.
He joined the anti-French Algerian resistance in Tunisia.
His film Chronicle of the Years of Fire became the first African and Arab film to be awarded the Golden Palm at Cannes.
His son Tariq Lakhdar-Hamina became a film producer.
He and Portuguese director Manoel Deoliveira were both awarded the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
