Mayor of Portland, Maine from 1851 to 1852 who was nicknamed the "Father of Prohibition" and who outlawed the production and sale of liquor in Maine in 1851.

He worked as a tanner and volunteered as a firefighter before becoming a founding member of the Maine Temperance Union in 1837.

He was the Prohibition Party's candidate for President of the United States in the election of 1880.

He was born to Quaker parents and was married to Maria Cornelia Durant Maynard Dow.

He lost the presidential election of 1880 to James Garfield .
