ABOUT NELSON MERCED
Politician and Democrat who became the first Hispanic person to work in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1989. He was also later elected to the Massachusetts General Court.
He joined the United States Navy in 1965 before settling in Massachusetts in 1976.
He campaigned to support the protection of bilingual education in Massachusetts and fought for immigrant rights.
He married Maria Estela Carrion, and had three children whose names are Jacobo, Rene, and Raquel.
Edward James Olmos is another well known Latino activist.
