British politician who became a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party in 1983. He served in many governmental departments and in 2008 became the U.K. Parliament's Chief Whip.
Upon his graduation from the University of Manchester, he worked in advertising.
He served as a legal adviser for the United Kingdom's General Trade Union.
He grew up near Tunbridge Wells and attended an all-boys school during his youth.
He supported Gordon Brown 's campaign for Prime Minister.
