Emmy Award-winning actor and director best known for his directing work on the ABC television series Barney Miller.

He began acting as a part of WCAU-TV's live Western series Action in the Afternoon in Philadelphia.

He was referenced in the popular television cartoon The Smurfs through the character of a gnome named Mr. Pitlik.

He was married to Susan Whittaker from 1986 until his death in 1999.

He once appeared on The Andy Griffith Show.
