Award-winning Australian film director of films such as Salvation, Golden Braid, and Lust and Revenge.
He established a reputation as a photographer before moving to Australia in 1965.
He underwent a liver transplant in 2009, which was shown in the documentary film On Borrowed Time.
His father Wim Cox was a documentary film producer.
He and The Piano director Jane Campion both won the AACTA Award for Best Director.
