ABOUT PEDRO SEGARRA
Democratic Party politician and the first known gay mayor of Hartford, Connecticut. Before succeeding fellow Democrat and Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez, he presided over the Hartford City Council and was a partner in the Segarra & López Law Firm.
After establishing a Latino student group at Greater Hartford Community College, he transferred to the undergraduate political science program at the University of Hartford. He later earned both a J.D. and a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Connecticut.
He helped found the Hartford-based Hispanic Health Council.
Born in a Puerto Rican village, he moved to New York City in his late childhood. He later married Charlie Ortiz and settled in Hartford, Connecticut.
He was only the second gay man to become mayor of a state capital; David Cicilline , who held office as Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island from 2003 until 2011, was the first politician to hold this distinction.
