ABOUT PETER JEFFERSON
Famous as the father of third United States President Thomas Jefferson , he is also remembered for his skill as a cartographer and land surveyor. In the early 1750s, he created the first accurate map of the Appalachian Mountains' Allegheny range.
Though he was not formally schooled during his childhood years, he learned to read and subsequently taught himself many subjects.
In the late 1740s, he became one of the founders of the Loyal Land Company.
Born in Chesterfield County, Virginia, to Thomas and Mary (Field) Jefferson, he grew up with five siblings. His marriage to Jane Randolph produced, in addition to future President Thomas Jefferson, children named Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha, Peter, Lucy, Anna, and Randolph.
Though he died before he could ever meet her, Jefferson was the father-in-law of United States First Lady Martha Jefferson .
