He first gained widespread recognition with his televised serial Subarnalata in 1997.
He was also a documentarian whose documentary Suchitra Mitra won the National Film Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film.
He married Papiya Sen and had two daughters.
He and fellow Indian director P. Bharathiraja both won National Film Awards for their work.
