ABOUT RICHARD ARMITAGE

English actor who was introduced to international audiences as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012. Prior to this role, he was known for playing John Thorton on North & South.

He played the cello and flute in school orchestras as a teen. After graduating from Brockington College in Enderby, he attended Pattison College and studied acting.

He had his breakout television role as Guy of Gisborne on the UK's Robin Hood.

He has an older brother named Chris. His mother Margaret was a secretary and his father John was an engineer.

He had a supporting role opposite Chris Evans in the 2011 hit action film Captain America: The First Avenger .
