Infamous for his many prison escapes, this convicted murderer and felon was shot and killed by police after orchestrating a 2015 escape from New York's Clinton Correctional Facility along with fellow inmate David Sweat.
A career criminal, he murdered his boss, William Rickerson, and subsequently killed an engineer named Charles Arnold Perreault. Matt first escaped from prison in 1986, while an inmate at the Erie County Correctional Facility.
For part of his adulthood, he was imprisoned in Mexico.
Born in Tonawanda, New York, he spent his early teenage years in a group home after being accused of theft from a houseboat. He had a half-sibling named Wayne M. Schimpf and was the father to a son.
His dramatic final prison escape bears comparison with that depicted in Stephen King 's novella-turned-film The Shawshank Redemption.
