Director who is best known for his 2014 debut feature The Lunchbox. The film won him the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. It also won him the Rail d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
Café Regular, Cairo, his Arab language short, screened at more than 40 international film festivals and won more than 12 awards.
He directed the 2017 film The Sense of an Ending, starring Jim Broadbent .
He married Claudia Muñoz in 2009.
He and Karan Johar are both directors born in India.
