He was educated in Columbia, Oxford, and Princeton. He wrote the landmark book For Anarchy, State, and Utopia, laying out the principles of modern libertarianism.
He rejected John Locke's idea that human beings were born with certain inalienable rights.
He was married to the poet Gjertrud Schnackenberg.
His ideas were repeated and embraced by people as diverse as the creators of South Park and the founder of Whole Foods John Mackey .
