Director of The Killing Fields for which he received an Oscar nomination in 1985.
He attended the Universiry of Manchester.
He directed the films The Mission, for which he received his second Oscar nomination in 1987, and The Scarlet Letter.
He married Jane Lapotaire in 1974, but divorced her in 1980. They had one child together.
He worked with Robert De Niro on the 1986 film The Mission.
