ABOUT RONALD MASON

A well known BBC producer and director, Mason was a prominent member of the European Broadcasting Union and was the chief executive of BBC Radio Drama. He is perhaps most remembered for championing and directing television and radio versions of the work of playwright Brian Friel .

After earning a degree from Queen's University, Belfast, he worked for several years as a French and English teacher. He began working for the BBC's Belfast office in 1955.

He directed BBC radio 3 productions of Eugene O'Neill's famous play Long Day's Journey into Night and David Mamet 's work The Duck Variations.

The youngest of seven children, he spent his youth in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

He directed Sebastian Shaw in a television miniseries titled Here Lies Miss Sabry.
