American chess master, author, and chess composer who was considered to be one of the top players in the world during his prime.

He began working on chess puzzles and problems in his youth.

He is considered by many to be one of the greatest puzzle authors in American chess history and he was inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame for his contributions to the game.

His son published much of his work after his death.

He is comparable to other influential chess thinkers such as Savielly Tartakower .
