ABOUT SAMUEL GARDNER
Composer, entertainer, songwriter, performer, artist, instrumentalist, musician, and violinist who was known for winning the Pulitzer Prize for his Second String Quartet composition in the year 1918, as well as for his well-renowned song composition "From the Canebrake" (1918).
He began playing the violin when he was just seven years of age. He attended the New York Institute of Musical Art from the year 1908 to the year 1913. He joined the Kneisel Quartet from 1914 to 1915 before performing with the Chicago Symphony in the year 1915.
He was also a music teacher and taught the violin at several schools and universities including the Juilliard School, Columbia University, and the University of Wisconsin. He also wrote several textbooks about the violin and about violin performance.
He was born in Elizavethgrad, Russia, but he moved to the United States when he was an infant. He had two children. He was married to Henrietta Holtzman Gardner. He died on January 23rd, 1984 from old age.
His piece "From the Canebrake" (1918) was performed by Jascha Heifetz .
