ABOUT SHARON SAYLES BELTON
The first African American and woman to be elected the Mayor of Minneapolis, an office she held from 1994 to 2001. She received the prestigious Rosa Parks Award for her work in politics.
She studied biology and sociology at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
She reversed a crime wave when she came into office in the mid 90's.
She raised three children with husband Steven Belton.
She was an African American mayor like Marion Barry .
