Acclaimed director of the films Serpico (1973), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976) and 12 Angry Men (1957). He received four Academy Award nominations for Best Director across his career.
He studied theater at Columbia University.
He was a founding member of New York's Actors Studio, and his career began in off-Broadway productions.
He married four times: first to actress Rita Gam in 1949, then to socialite Gloria Vanderbilt on August 27, 1956, then to Gail Lumet Buckley on November 23, 1963, and finally to Mary Gimbel in 1980.
He cast Sean Connery in five of his movies, including Family Business and Murder on the Orient Express.
