Tony Award winner and filmmaker who directed The Hours, Billy Elliot, The Reader, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
He began life in show business by being a clown's apprentice.
He received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and/or Best Director for each film he made between 2000 and 2011.
He was married to Lucy Sexton with whom he had a daughter named Annabel Clare. Prior to that union he was in a relationship with set designer Ian MacNeil for 13 years.
He directed Nicole Kidman in her Oscar-winning performance in The Hours.
