ABOUT SUSAN CAROL POWELL
Pageant winner, singer, and television personality famously known for being crowned Miss America in 1981. Her subsequent singing career led her to star in Broadway musicals and perform as a soloist for both John Williams and Keith Lockhart with the Boston Pops. She was also the host of the television series Home Matters on the Discovery Channel for all of its 9 seasons.
She studied vocal music at Oklahoma City University and performed at the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma before going on to achieve her pageant titles and embarking on a singing career that would debut with the Seattle Opera in 1981.
She was recognized by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame as an Ambassador of Good Will in 2002. She is a coloratura soprano.
She was born in Elk City, Oklahoma. Her family encouraged her passion for singing by enrolling her in singing competitions and church functions.
In 2008, she performed on an episode of Don't Forget the Lyrics! alongside fellow former Miss America pageant winners Heather French Henry and Kirsten Haglund .
