She pursued higher education in the United States and Israel before relocating to France in 1967. She completed a PhD in comparative literature in France. She published her first books her first book, La Sixième, in 1984.
She has written over 150 books in her career. She is American by birth, but she chose to write primarily in French. She received a knighthood from the French government.
