Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who ran the editorial page of the The Wall Street Journal from 1958 to 1971.
He worked at the candy store that his father operated in Raleigh before focusing on journalism and reporting.
He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for Editorial Writing and another one in 1984 for Commentary.
He had two daughters with his wife Frances Claypoole, whom he married in 1937.
He was once awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.
