ABOUT VOLKER BERTELMANN

Pianist, composer and experimental musician known for his work on films such as The Old Guard , Hotel Mumbai and Ammonite . In 2023, he won the Academy Award for best original score for All Quiet on the Western Front . He was previously nominated, under his stage name Hauschka, for his music for the 2016 film Lion .

He composed the soundtrack for the 2007 film Wortbrot.

In 2018, he signed a record deal with Sony Masterworks. He also scored films like 2018's Adrift and 2019's The Art of Dancing in the Rain. He scored series like HBO's Gunpowder and Showtime's Patrick Melrose .

While working on the music for All Quiet on the Western Front, he used his great-grandmother's turn-of-the-century harmonium, a pump organ.

For his first Oscar win in 2023, he beat out Justin Hurwitz , Carter Burwell , John Williams and Son Lux.
